Ashton Gate Stadium Hosts Women’s FA Cup Final

May is crunch time in the football calendar as we find out who has won the Premier League title and the Champions League final takes place.
This year one of the biggest events in the football fixtures list will be taking place at Ashton Gate Stadium, the Women’s FA Cup Final.
Bristol City chief executive Guy Price said: "We are delighted to be hosting the Women's FA Cup Final at Ashton Gate. We know 2012 will be the nation's year of sport and we want to make sure Bristol is a shining light in the national sports calendar.”
Mr Price was of course referring to the fact that the England men’s team will be competing in Euro 2012 between June and July, and that the Olympics will then be hosted in London. The Women’s FA match takes place in the same week that an Olympic torch relay will pass through the City of Bristol.
This is the first time that this prestigious event has taken place in Bristol and Ashton Gate was specifically chosen by the Football Association for its excellent facilities and accessibility.
The 2011 Women’s FA final was hosted in Coventry and the Bristol academy ladies team featured in the final. Unfortunately they lost but it was a valiant effort against an Arsenal ladies team that has won the trophy a record eleven times.
Turnout last year was around 14,000 and the organisers will hope to top that in 2012. If Ashton Gate Stadium sells out the then there will be more than 21,000 fans there.
They are encouraged to get their tickets early as the game is only being screened on Sky Sports and not terrestrial television. The Women’s FA Cup final takes place on May 26, though the kick off time has not yet been confirmed.
Mr Price added: "We want to bring as many people together as possible for this event, ensuring local people and communities play a part in what will be a great week of sport for Bristol. We are very proud to be hosting the match and look forward to putting on a fantastic event at Ashton Gate for the final."
